I told my patrons there would be no episode 2, that the final strip of episode 1 would be the end of Ultra Fem comics. And I still feel that way. There’s no market for Ultra Fem comics. My customers have spoken loud and clear. They do not want the comics. Period.
When I launched this latest attempt, the starting patronage was a little over $300/month. Anemic. Not nearly enough to justify the time and effort. (My first launch in 2005 brought $700 the first month. If Paypal had not banned me 2 months later, my life would be very different right now.) That $300 quickly dwindled when a couple of overzealous patrons couldn’t afford their pledges. (I knew that would happen.) No new patrons came in to replace them.
I couldn’t justify the weekly pace I’d planned, and patronage fell further. Some felt the need to tell me I wasn’t doing enough as they walked out. Maybe so, but as I said, I can’t justify it. (I’ve published 250 strips as of today, by the way.)
I started the daily Alice comics as a discipline, to make myself draw every day. It worked, and it was great fun. But Alice turned on me. She brought in TEN TIMES the traffic of Ultra Fem. TEN. TIMES. And ZERO patrons. No new commission customers, either. Nothing. (The few people who’ve asked me when the next Alice strip is coming are NOT patrons, and they’ve never spent money in the store. Surprised?)
So, you can forgive me if I see no future for Ultra Fem.
There are a few patrons left, supporting me a little bit as they can, and I’m grateful. They understand that the patronage is to help me survive and keep drawing.
So I’ll poop out a new strip every once in a while, as I can. If the patronage grows, I’ll devote time to the strip. If not, I won’t. See the patron page for details.
